11 Must-Have Goals for Leaders

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

I assist leaders to become successful in their roles at the various organizational levels. Generally, by the end of December, top-performing people have habit of creating their blueprint for next year. Therefore, I thought to write this post, so that, as a leader, you can also consider these areas, while preparing your goals of 2020.

We know very well that every leader is unique and each leader is struggling to achieve vision using their experience, skills acquired and learning attitude. To help you get a head start on your leadership development plan, here's a list of development goals that may apply to you too. You may choose to pick up any or many goals for 2020.

1. Productivity Improvement - Analyze very closely your entire day's schedule. Are there any pockets of time that are being wasted. I mean, are you doing any work, which in place of you any other person can also do and you can focus on more important tasks? To achieve your goals faster you must have to firstly 'lead you' first, very tightly. And that's where your day's schedule comes in play. You should always have on your plate tasks which others can never do and you only can do as a leader. These tasks may be related to strategic thinking, creative ideas, better connecting with internal and external customers of your business, etc., I am sure you would love to go through this course of21 Day Action Plan System for Productivity Improvementwhich will skyrocket your productivity in just 21 days.

2. Strategic Thinking - Improve ability to see the big picture and take a longer range, broader business perspective. Learn to step back from the day-to-day tactical details of my business and focus on the "Why", not just the "what" and "how".

3. Coaching - Shift your leadership style away from always directing and telling and learn to guide and develop people reporting me. I will work with each person working under me to help them create and achieve their personal and professional development plans.

4. Being more Customer-Driven - It is needless to say that today's customers are in driving seat. The more any product/service becomes customer focused the more it grows. Today many industries including healthcare have started focusing their efforts on continually improving customer experience. When we talk about customers, it means both internal and external customers. Customer satisfaction is a matter of past; its time to delight the customers. You need to continually develop and invent recipes to attract, grab, maintain, retain and grow customer bases, based on your brand's unique 'customer experience'. Can you summarize in one sentence in the comment below, what is your brand's customer experience goal? _____________________________________.

5. Listening - Learn to pay attention and demonstrate to others that I value what they have to say. Use active listening, open-ended questions, body language, and eliminate distractions that get in the way of my ability to listen.

6. Data Analysis - Business is a sum of many forms of data. Because each transaction ultimately summarises into some form of data. Learn how to understand, interpret, and use "the numbers" to improve your business. Your ability to analyze your past data, customer perspective and industry trend can lift your business above the clouds. This should be your core work and decision making must be based on data analysis only. Many leaders have the habit of taking decisions on 'what they feel', but, in the long run, decisions taken by data analysis wins.

7. Inspiration for People - Improve your ability to inspire people working for you or with you. Simply asking for work will not motivate them. If you want them to work with their highest potential, you need to inspire them. Generally, many times in training, I ask leaders, do you have 'people's diary'? Participants get surprised by listening to this word because generally, we all have a habit of keeping a diary for listing our pending tasks. Can you not keep a diary of people working with you, in which you 'genuinely' record your all interactions with the person and what actions you have taken to inspire a person, what he has achieved, where is the shortfall? Just like we maintain financial accounts, we should also maintain people's performance accounts, because, it is the people who will put their best to make your vision true? Don't you think so?

8. Cross-functional knowledge and Perspective - Learn about other aspects of the business that my own function silo.

9. Industry, competitive and customer knowledge - Improve my understanding of our industry and our competitors. Get more and more closer to your customers. Make a habit of taking customer feedback on every customer touchpoints. Most of the time, your customer feedback will help you design your business strategy. It is said that "Feedback is the Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner of Champions". I have found that brands, businesses become arrogant when talking and listening to customer feedback. This one skill can help you leap forward from your competitors.

10. Become 'Change Agent' - Chane is constant. Average people don't like change, champions do. The habit of bringing change with respect to the circumstances makes a leader successful. Not only bringing change but implementing the change successfully involving people. Be more of a change catalyst, a champion of change. Learn to implement and sustain change under any circumstances. Don't allow personal ego when accepting or implementing new ideas, because in business profit matters.

11. Talent Management - Improve my ability to assess, hire, promote, and develop. Fill all open positions with nothing but "A" players and replace chronic underperformers. Develop a succession plan for every position.
